Redesignation allows Burmese nationals to apply for Temporary Protected Status.
This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status for Burma for an additional 18 months starting in November. The department indicated that the conditions in Burma currently inhibit the safe return to that country. These include an economic crisis and limited access to food, water, shelter, and medical care.
The military coup d’état in February 2021 led to ongoing violence, extensive human rights abuses, the use of deadly force against unarmed individuals, mass displacement of civilians, and arbitrary detentions, which worsened humanitarian conditions.
“The people of Burma are continuing to suffer a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis due to the military coup and security forces’ brutal violence against civilians,” said Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Under this extension and redesignation, Burmese nationals and habitual residents will be eligible to temporarily stay in the United States until conditions in the country improve and individuals can safely return.”
